The Power of Community

A lot of Amish have moved into this area.  We have gotten to know a number of families.  We stopped in at one of the families last Monday for some business.  There were Amish people working all over the place.  We found out the husband/father passed away one month before.  The day before was Sunday.  Amish meet for services every other week.  They rotate to each other’s homes for the service.  It was this particular family’s turn for the service.  A few hours before the service, their horse barn and another building caught fire and were destroyed.

The Amish showed up on Monday to clean it up and rebuild.  We arrived a little after noon, by that time the buildings were cleaned up and cement poured for the new buildings.  The next day they came back to rebuild.  By Wednesday, both buildings were finished.  We had heard of how the Amish work together for things like that, but this was our first time observing it close up.  It was quite amazing.

I have seen farming communities come together to help a farmer who had a heart attack.  The community farmers lined up their combines and trucks to harvest his fields before returning home to harvest their own fields.  It is a beautiful sight to see a community work together.

I think that is what God would intend for us to do.  He said to love your neighbor as yourself.  Watching the news, one can see that many have forgotten that.  And the Scripture in Luke 6:31 “ Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Is a good one for everyone to practice.  If we all made these verses part of our lives, what a difference it would make.  I think we all would live less stressful and happier lives.
